Flying Trapeze
AerialA form of aerial acrobatics involving swinging from a trapeze bar to perform tricks and catches with a partner or into a net.
Tricks
24Backflip Dismount
A backward somersault from the bar into the safety net, one of the first dismounts learned.
Catch (Knee Hang)
The first catch: the flyer performs a knee hang and is caught by a catcher on the catch trapeze.
Cutaway
A half-turn followed by a backward somersault to the catcher, combining rotation and direction change.
Double Layout
Two straight-body somersaults from the bar to the catcher, requiring exceptional height and timing.
Double Pirouette
A somersault with two full twists, combining rotation and spinning at high speed.
Forward Over (Uprise Somersault)
A forward somersault thrown from the front end of the swing, traveling toward the catch trapeze.
Full Twisting Double
A double somersault combined with a full twist, demanding extreme air awareness and control.
Half Turn
A 180-degree turn during the swing, allowing the flyer to face the opposite direction before being caught.
Hands Off
Releasing the bar at the peak of a backswing and falling into the net, building comfort with letting go.
Hocks Off
Releasing from a knee hang position and extending to be caught by the wrists by the catcher.
Knee Hang
The most fundamental flying trapeze trick: the flyer swings out, hooks their knees over the bar, and releases their hands to hang inverted.
Layout
A straight-body somersault from the bar to the catcher, requiring precise timing and height.
Passing Leap
A trick where the flyer passes over the catcher's bar before being caught on the return.
Pirouette
A full twist added to a somersault, spinning on the long axis while rotating in the air.
Planche
A dramatic pose at the end of the swing where the flyer holds a straight-body position at the peak of the arc.
Quadruple Somersault
Four somersaults from the bar to the catcher, achieved by only a handful of flyers in history.
Return
After a catch, the catcher swings the flyer back to the fly bar, completing the full trick cycle.
Set Position
The foundational swing position where the flyer learns to generate height and maintain form through the arc.
Shooting Star
The flyer releases from the bar, extends into a star shape at the peak, and is caught by the catcher.
Split
The flyer opens into a split position at the peak of the swing before returning to catch position.
Straddle Whip
A whipping motion with legs in straddle position to generate force before the knee hang.
Takeoff
Leaving the platform and swinging out on the fly bar with proper timing and body position.
Triple Somersault
Three somersaults from the bar to the catcher, one of the most difficult tricks in flying trapeze.
Triple with Half Twist
A triple somersault with an added half twist, one of the most technically demanding combinations.
